Dental implants

Losing a tooth or a number of teeth can be extremely upsetting and can affect a person’s confidence, cause discomfort, change their appearance and cause problems when eating or chewing.

If this is something that has affected you, our team at Windsor Smiles will do all they can to resolve such issues as quickly and as efficiently as possible in order to minimise any emotional or physical distress.

Dental implants are a commonly used restorative treatment to fill a gap (or gaps) and to return your smile to its natural beauty. They are long lasting and hardwearing and our dentists are highly experienced within the dental implant field.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is essentially a root for an artificial tooth. It anchors the new artificial tooth into place, creating a strong and permanent base. A titanium screw is embedded into the jawbone to support the replacement tooth or teeth. It is a permanent fixture within the mouth and is often used as an alternative to bridgework or dentures.

Titanium is used due to its excellent bonding properties with the jawbone and, over time, becomes fully incorporated into the mouth.

Dental implants are natural in appearance and feel. If looked after properly they can last a lifetime. We offer a number of different implant options, please see our individual examples to see our extensive treatment options.

Treatment

Your Windsor Smiles dentist will recommend the best type of dental implant for your individual case. There are a number of variations that can be used.

Where you have lost a natural tooth, we recommend starting the implant process straight away so we can avoid any potential deterioration of the bone.

Dental implant treatment usually takes place over a few months as the healing process can take some time. Your Windsor Smiles practitioner will want to ensure the treatment has worked well and you are enjoying positive results.

We have set out the typical dental implant process below:

  • At the initial consultation, we will examine and assess the area requiring an implant. We will take x-rays, photographs and may recommend a CT scan so we can evaluate the quality of the jawbone. We will plan out the treatment in advance.
  • We will need to prepare the site for the implant. This may include rebuilding or regenerating the jaw bone to ensure it is strong enough to hold the implant and support it over time.
  • The next stage is to place the implant or implants into the jaw which entails a minor surgical procedure carried out with the aid of local anaesthetic or intravenous sedation. Often, we can remove the natural tooth and insert the implant at the same time during this phase of treatment.
  • The site now needs time to heal and while the stitches can be removed after around 14 days, it can take up to six months for the final stage of treatment. A temporary tooth or teeth will be fitted in the interim.
  • Once fully healed, an abutment is attached to the implant in order to support the new crown or bridge. This permanent fixture will be cemented into place or put directly onto the implant.

As the site heals you may need to make minor adjustments to your diet and stick to soft foods for at least six weeks. Smokers should avoid cigarettes altogether for at least a week after surgery as these can negatively affect the healing process. We would also advise cutting out alcohol and maintaining a positive oral care regime whilst you are healing.

The dental team will advise you on how to look after your new implant/s once you have had surgery. We will support you through the process and you can contact us at any time during the course of the treatment for advice.

Problems with dental implants

If you have had dental implants and are experiencing problems, please contact Windsor Smiles so we can help restore your mouth to it optimum health.

Some of the most common reasons patients have problems with their implants are:

  • The implant procedure was carried out by a less experienced dentist. Opting for cheaper treatment can cause long term problems with may end up costing more than the original procedure itself
  • Cheap and poor-quality material was used when carrying out the treatment – this is a common reason patients attend Windsor Smiles for repair of their implants
  • Smoking can irritate the gum and cause deterioration
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Certain medical conditions can affect the body’s ability to heal

Windsor Smiles dentists are experienced and fully qualified in placing dental implants. We will always carry out our treatments to the highest standard and provide aftercare advice.
